Reflection
Make connections between what you studied in this nutrition course with what you’ve learned in other courses at SLCC or before. Make specific references to your work in this class and in the other courses. How did what you learn in the other courses enhance what you learned in nutrition, and vice versa?
This fall semester, I enrolled in HLTH-1020 (Nutrition) at Salt Lake Community College. A lot of what I learned in this course closely relates to my Fitness for Life course (Zumba). My Zumba course helped me understand that "lifelong wellness" is being able to maintain balance with relation to physical, metal and social health. Nutrition similarly focused on the importance of health but I was able to learn more of concepts and body functions. This two way lens really opened my eyes to the small details in health. My Fitness for Life course exposed me to the physical aspects of health while Nutrition helped me make sense of these aspects and plan to maintain healthy "numbers." (e.g. servings, food type, intake of vitamin/mineral/calorie, labels, prevention for diseases). Both of these classes have built on each other in terms of how important it is to live a healthy lifestyle. This course has helped me grow more aware of my choices in lifestyle. I have become more sensitive with my choices. This knowledge will stay with me because I know that health is vital in all that we do.
Reflect on how you thought about nutrition before you took this course and how you think about it now that the course is over. Have any of your assumptions or understandings changed? Why? What assignments/activities/readings were influential in this process? How will you approach (course topic) differently in the future?
Before this course, I understood the basic ideas/concepts to nutrition (e.g. eat fruits/vegetables, exercise, etc.). However, despite knowing the basic layout to living healthy, I never applied this information to my life. I never measured what I ate, how much I ate, times I ate, etc. It was all very disarray. What really influenced me to start living more healthy was the Dietary Analysis assignment. It broke down each nutrient and gave me what my DRI (Dietary Reference Intake) goal should be. Factors of age, height, weight, activity level, and BMI were used to create this DRI. I finally saw the type of life I lived on a day to day basis, I could no longer turn a blind eye to it. I also got an accurate plan which I really enjoyed. Oftentimes, one can get a plan general to a group of individuals, this plan was accurate to me and my current lifestyle. I am very academic oriented and my priorities always lie in academia. I always prioritize an assignment over my personal care. This course did not necessarily changed any of my assumptions/understanding, but rather acted as an eye opener to my current lifestyle. This semester has been extreme which is why I plan to have a better balance to continue with my plan to live a health life.
