I had the opportunity of taking FHS (Lifespan Human Development) 1500 this spring semester. The lectures, class discussions and assignments challenged me in different capacities. The assignments I chose to showcase in my portfolio are an essay and an observation. My process to complete these assignments consisted of me seeking out peer reviews and going to the writing center.
Peer review suggestions were very helpful in this process. They were the second highlight of my whole experience in class. By conversing with my peers outside of class, I was able to foster a better connection with them and when I sought out commentary to make my work better, they provide me better ways to shed light on sentence structure and usage of terms. I exchanged papers with some of my peers, gave them an overall summary of my topic and then pointed out areas of my paper that I wanted them to pay extra attention to. I emphasized the importance of critical versus passive feedback. Though I felt validated by their efforts to point out strong pieces of my writing, I was always seeking suggestions that challenged my thoughts and overall work. This was initially uncomfortable yet rewarding.
On the other hand, I really struggled with citations in my first essay and decided that in order to do better in this class I would have to visit the writing center. I have learned that by citing studies and background information, it helps build layers of analysis. Also, understanding tone has given me insight to critically analyzing my audience. By providing examples, I feel that key elements and concepts can be better understood and grasped.
Overall, the assignments I did for this course were really rewarding. I learned so much and I gained different perspectives of renowned scholars on human development. In addition, the fact that I had to think outside the box multiple times, provided me with different techniques on how to approach my writing. I really enjoyed taking FHS 1500 because I learned a lot about myself.
